Note: If I had no work on, I'd be setting up a bed website. There's such a gap between the giant bed companies and the small firms, at least with their websites. I can't for the life of me find the bed I want working any of these websites. I know no brands - which is the way the big firms sell beds, and the small firms simply say to contact them, and don't rank well at all. Is this the same in your area when you search google for beds?

Now on to the real subject. I need a new bed. Any advice?

Sick of cheap beds that break easily. Wooden slats always snap. I think I have 4 missing out of this one which leads to an inevitable argument over who's actually stealing who's side of the bed when we're both rolling to the middle due to the dip. And the last bed was a cheap hollow tubed bed that broke pretty much in one go. As soon as one leg got weak in the middle of the bed (yes, the very middle, it had 9 legs! lol) the rest took strain and within a week we were pretty much sleeping at the height of a mattress.

I've had divan's before and like their draw thing they have going on, but they seem to weaken in the middle of both halves which creates a 'bar-like' feel in the middle of the bed right where you back is. And my back aint the best, like many of you. Though I'm wondering if you guys know of a good quality divan perhaps?

Thought of a nice old oak bed, that'd live longer than me, but the bedroom has built in white wardrobes. If I could dare to paint an oak bed white (sorry to any carpenters on here for that comment) then I'd be having the quality and the looks. But I can't even imagine painting good quality oak. Would that be acceptable, maybe?

Failing either of those options. What the hell is a good bed? I know what one is that doesn't last long. But what's one that's comfy and will last a lifetime?

And then the mattress, we have an average mattress now, we're hoping to have a bigger bed but need to check sizes etc. But either way we'll probably get shut of this mattress and get a really decent one to last.

Needs to be anti-bug-thing. And not NASA style (which as Jeremy Clarkson would say, was built for a specific purpose that only dozens of people will ever require so why the hell did they commercialise it?!?!?) memory foam. I hated all I've tried (that's tried not slept in!) however we have a memory foam thin layer thing on top of our mattress at the mo to try and counter-balance the tip. I like it a bit. But I'm sure an actual nice mattress would do much better.

Anyway, sorry to waffle, at a lost cause. If you can recommend anything at all that would help me please do.

Also, I prefer buying from small businesses, if you know of a craftsman that can make something give me a shout. But big firm brand names I don't mind, I'll just try to get the bed via a small firm somehow. Maybe even give 'em a chance of getting an account they don't have already with a recommended brand? Who knows.

We have a very solid beautiful sleigh bed, and the slats are hardwood, too, all screwed down as well, not cheap sliding slats like in cheaper beds.

As to mattresses, the more pockets in a pocket sprung system the better to adjust to every move without being too floppy, I love our bed - and whatever you do stay away from beds with a firmer center core, as for side sleepers this pushes the hips and therefore the lower spine up and can cause slipped discs and all sorts, nightmare.

I had a bed made as I'm 6'4" and couldn't get something we liked. It's made out of Iroko and is a super kingsize. Didn't cost that much to get made but the mattress cost us a small fortune but is worth every penny and I would always recommend spending as much as possible when it comes to buying a quality mattress.

OK first things first... We spend almost a third of our lives in bed so why do we spend so little on one of the most important aspects of our life? I'd put money on the fact that most people (OK men) would spend more on their TV than on their bed, In the past I've spent more on a shirt than I have on bed sheets!!!!

Open the wallet Dan and you won't regret it. The first £200 should be spent on a decent base for your bed, that will get you a well constructed if not slightly plain looking bed, add 2/3/4/5/6/£700 on something that suits your taste.

Next get a memory foam mattress. Now this is trial and error and is loaded with pit falls, you can spend £300-£1,000 and you can find the perfect mattress anywhere in that range, you can also find some stinkers!

Point to note, memory foam toppers are a waste of time, don’t go there. If you get comfort out of a topper then you are missing out on the real deal.

Now the best mattress we've ever had was from 'Raylon' but sadly after a year we noticed a split in the mattress, we bought it from 'Benson For Beds' who pretty much told us to and pretty much in those words:yikes: I extracted my revenge but it also meant I couldn't buy that same mattress as it was exclusive to them. We shopped around but the mattress we bought, even though cost twice the price, wasn't a match for the Raylon. Our problem was feeling un-easy trying out new beds.

It's that typical scene, you walk in to a bed store and see people trying out beds, 9 times out of 10 they lie down with arms at 12 o'clock all regimented, hum a little then say yeah this is then one for me. But who ever sleeps like that?? Normally it's arms and legs flying all over the place.

Now a true memory foam stops you from doing that. You lie down and it moulds to you within a very short period of time, it's a bit like being cuddled. We all want to be back in the womb and a good memory foam mattress will do this for and thus you'll have the best nights sleep ever.

A bed you can buy off the net. A mattress you can't mate

I have oak throughout my house Dan, American white oak and it's as good as the day it went in. 9 years ago.
It's the strength your after remember, a small joinery workshop could make you one to your own spec.
I seen a TV show a few months ago and they made a bed out of railway sleepers, lol.
So strong though.

Joe, White Oak might just be my favorite hardwood. If I had unlimited dough, the entire house would have it on the floors and I would build all the furniture out of white oak in the "Greene and Greene" style.
