Discuss New here - self builder and question about Gyvlon in the British & UK Tiling Forum area at TilersForums.com.

Hello everyone, and apologies in advance if this post is in the wrong place.

I am working on a self build, as the person who buys materials, finds labour (only where essential), while my husband does the DIY (that has included the design).

We are currently working on first fix, and have 2 floors in the house where we are laying UFH on a concrete / concrete & insulation floor.
The structure is from ICF (insualated concrete formwok) and the builder who worked with us on the structure will be laying self levelling screed over the UFH as part of his agreed scope of work. He wants to use Gyvlon; so this is where I thought you could help.

The floors concerned will have a mixture of finishes. These are planned to be large porcelain tiles (600mm x 600m), kitchen and bathroom tiles (300mm x 300mm), engineered wood floor, possibly resin (still looking for something we can afford).

I would really value your advice on what you think is the best self levelling compound to cover UFH pipes?

If we end up going with Gyvlon because it is what the contractor knows and likes, what work will we need to do to make the tiling work easy?

thanks in advance
Frances

You've made the tiling work really easy for him already as you're using gyvlon, it's great to work on, super flat.
Now what you need to bear in mind is how dry the screed is before you tiler begins laying. You'll find a thread here that will take you to a gyvlon rep and he can advise you as to how to dry the screed naturally or by switching on the underfloor heating. DON'T switch it on until the rep tells you at what length of time you can use the heating and at what starting temperature, i'm hearing so many different opinions that i'm a bit confused myself!!!
Once the screed it dry enough you will need to use an uncoupling membrane, this will allow for expansion in the screed, and you may need to add expansion strips in the doorways too. Either Schluter Ditra matting or Durabase C1, which is cheaper. Now whether this is fixed with gypsum based or cement based adhesive is again up for discussion here.
Speak to the gyvlon rep and or get a spec off Mapei or Bal and you'll get a gaurenteed spec of them as to which adhesives to use.
