Hi all seems I am your newest member. Seen some great advice, really impressed. Looking to tile my bathroom (back to brick) using hardie backer. Hardie web page says that it can be used direct to masonry using a thinset and then screwed "in some situations". What situations? Dont want to loose the width of the room by using batterns has anyone used this direct to masonry method Would appreciate thoughts & advise. Many Thanks

Hi assessor & :welcome: to the forum.
If your going back to brick, I would dot & dab plasterboard to the wall - far cheaper.
What tiles are you using?

With regards to the screwing of the backer board, these would be in addition to the adhesive to reduce any possibility of the board delaminating from the brickwork.

Post some before & after pics:thumbsup:

You are OK using standard plasterboard in a shower area as long as you seal the tray to the adjacent wall and then seal the tiles to the tray.
I know some of the guys on this forum advocate the use of either a moisture resistant board or backer board but as long as you seal the shower correctly you should have no problems. (wait for the adverse replies lol:prrr:)

I would use a flex adhesive to fix the tiles back and Mapei Ultracolour grout. (only as I love it:drool5:)
