New Stone tiler.

Hi all, I'm new here and have been looking through many threads gettings some good advice.

I have tiled quite a few times before very successfully with porcelain tiles but will soon be starting work on our new bathroom (currently a bedroom) and will be tiling with 12mm moleanos limestone on floor and walls.

For the T&G floor i will overboard with ply once all plumbing is in etc. But for the walls after reading up i am concerned about the weight, walls are currently 2 coat plaster then VERY fine stipple artex.

My initial thought was to remove or deeply score the artex back to plaster, but will this be enough or should i definately go back to brick then dot n dab with plasterboard.

Eitherway isn't a major problem and something i can competently do, just dont want to create more work than needed.

The plaster "seems" solid enough no hollow sounds when knocked etc.

The only concern is with artex if prep work was'nt done properly before being applied could give some concern, Try putting warm water on the artex and scraping it off if it has been painted with vinyl silk it will a bugger to scrape off but stick with it.

Hello carl and welcome to the forums........a steam stripper comes in handy for artex removal......make sure you wear a mask that artex might contain asbestos..depending on how old it is.........

Yeah i have a steam wallpaper stripper. may take time as it has been silk emulsioned.

Main concern is if the plaster is ok or if it would be better to strip it all off and plasterboard.

You might just be on the border line for weight with that tile.....

I dont think the walls are suspect, they feel very sound compared to many i have come accross.

I was just worried by what i had read in general that plaster skim will only take around 20kg/m.

what would you expect the limestone to weigh in at (large format 600 x 400 tiles) and is the above figure correct?

More than 20kg a sqm!!!! Helped a mate lay that size limestone tile on a floor the other week and they weigh a tonne!! (not literally ) Stick one on some kitchen scales if unsure then work out weight per sqm.

I haven't recieved the tiles yet, having them delivered once i have done all prep.

I presumed they would be more like 30+ a meter. but is that definately too much for a plastered wall?

You may also be pushing the weight for plasterboard as well max 32kg m2
