Hi, Newish tiler here.
Did the NETT course about 2 months ago and slowy easing tiling into my day time job of being a floor fitter.

I have put in some pictures on my profile if anybody wants a look
I would appreciate any feedback particulary constructive criticsm!!

I just have a few queries so far
Are tile trims allways such a battle to get in and stay in?
How soon can you start grouting? when you quote a simple kitchen splash back for for a days labour you have to go back next day a addy is still drying and £120 or so for 2 days is not so appealing.
Are mosaics allways a pain in the *** when using them as borders as they are allways thinner than the tiles its going with
Is £600 ok money to fit 23m2 of 610x610 travs on conservatory floor and doing a tile border?

thanks in advance for the help and criticsm!

welcome m8.....when fitting tile trim, you should have all your tiles cut to but against trim,so loosly fit one at each side then put trim in place and then follow fixing the rest of tiles along or down the line.Use rapidset for kitchens and you can grout after 3hrs with most adhesives.pack the back of mosaics with the cheap 6mm tiles to suit then use a mosaic trowel4mm and the tiles should be level with the border tiles.I think you are a bit cheap at £600 as you will need to seal trav tiles more than likely and maybe back butter them depending which ones you are working with and you are inserting a border so i would go in at around £30 - £35 m2 imo. hope this helps.

Hi m8

I am not being funny or down putting but you really need a bit more milage under your belt before you go taking on stone especially 610x610 travertine its the hardest stone there is to lay.

Take your time m8 get some more experience if this job slaughters you and its quite likely it will, it will hammer your confidence and I wouldnt like to see that happen as your getting a good start

imo

depends on size of splashback mate but id be looking for at least 160 for a days labour plus materials, i always use rapidset as can grout after 3 hours, did one last week, 7.5 m2 bathroom walls with 400 x 250 tiles, 9 linear metre splashback, got 800 for a days work, worked my socks off and 13 hour day but did it lol

for the floor id charge 35m2 so 805 plus materials and maybes a bit more for the border, as tiler says trav is hard to lay, its brittle as hell out the box and only gains its strength when laid, seal before laying and after grouting so thats a days labour there for sealing and grouting, make sure substrate is good and strong and level 2 or it will come back and bite you in the butt

for 600 notes you can do my trav work and il keep the balance lol

as brian c says, use mosaic trowel for mosaics and pack out using cheapo b and q nasties bout 3.5 m2, add this to price of job

where you based about mate anyways

with brian there (again!) On mosaics i use my grouting trowel to gently squeeze mosaics into adhesive,it tends to eliminate individual mosaics stepping in/out.
did a quick calc on your floor cost, I'd be looking at about £750 labour only for that.
On your bathroom floor picture it looks as though you couldn't have started with a full tile in doorway, your tiles look square to the bath so I'm guessing the corner on the bath/door wall is cutting back at an acute angle. otherwise looks fine:thumbsup:

welcome mr e and jc tiling, get yourselves know at local tile shops and hand cards in, take them buns etc, my local shop gave me no work even though i sent people in, i popped in every day for a while buying the odd trim or spacers or grout and each time took a cupla cakes in or bacon butties and had a yap, pretty soon work started flowing in from them, now they gat most of my business, get a signed van and park it at b and q and homebase etc and go shopping, i get loads of work this way, take the wife shopping on sat and leave the van at homebase and then bugger off to asda for a few hours, i wear a clean logod top as well, never fails to get someone asking you for your details, brian c posted about polos and sweats a few days ago, good prices

i find the local rags and yell.com a waste

get a website see dan from admin, post flyers through doors do the walk of a tilers life
