Hello to everyone.:) Have 'lurked' for a while, thought I'd better take the plunge, register and say 'Hi'.

Aren't actually tiling at the moment, but am booked on a Tiling Course in July and hope to start up on my own as soon as possible afterwards (North East Tiling Training - 4 day plus 1 day Natural Stone). This is a big step for me - a complete career change (sick of wearing a suit and tie to work - and of working for someone else!). I would be very grateful for any advice or pointers on the sorts of steps people would recommend I take now (in advance of my training course) so that I am able to hit the ground running once I'm trained and accredited. Debts are beginning to pile up a wee bit and with a wife and kids to support I need to get earning as soon after I'm trained as possible.

Thanks - look forward to chatting with you all.

Welcome to the forum zoony :)

When starting out as self employed it's never easy, very few get fully booked straight away, it takes time to market yourself and build up cantacts and a good reputation, you need to go into it with as few overheads as possible, my advice is stick woth your day job, do some tiling jobs at weekends/evenings to pay your debts off then go for it. Thats just my opinion, I'm not saying you won't be flooded with work straight away.

Thanks for all the welcoming comments and advice - much appreciated.

Intend to hang onto day job for a while after training (hopefully not too long). Already have a couple of useful contacts - an established (busy!) tiler and my brov whose a plumber so hopefully that will help me pick up some early jobs. Frightening all the same, shelling out the best part of a grand for training and tools etc. keeping me awake nights. Can't afford to see that kind of money wasted, hoping I'll pick up a good level of skill quickly then it'll all b worth it.

Cheers.

Your experience is frightening Brh - everyone I have spoken to has been encouraging and advised me that the work will come once I'm equipped to do a good job. I wish you some much needed luck on the work front and am hoping I don't have as long a wait as you've had.
