Surprisingly it's not that difficult to get a shotgun licence.

This is quite a lot different to the Tony Martin situation though. I read the book "A right to Kill" about Martin - the case really isn't as clear cut as the press portrayed, it leaves you in two minds once reading it, mainly because of gross stupidity on Martins behalf trying to cover up what he did.

Hopefully genuine people defending their home won't fear prosecution now and wont need to cover up anything. If it's defending your home legitimately it looks like this conservative government have got it right. Under labour they'd be in prison and the robbers would have lots of compensation or something daft like that

I pretty much agree with you. The issue you have is firearms in a society that aren't generally exposed to firearms.

Still, I prefer it here than the situation they have in the USA.

The Americans deal with this differently (they have to for obvious reasons) by having a category of murder called "justifiable homicide". Brief explanation on the following link:-

Justifiable homicide - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

UK law really doesn't know how to deal with this issue.

On one

Don't need a license for the 20oz Estwing that lives next to my bed ;-)
(bought it for work years ago, too heavy for me, don't even think a shuttering chippy would get on with it)
For a moment there I had this vision of an Estwing axe( or tomohawk) winging its way across the bedroom into the back of the burglar's head!!!!!!!!!!!!
