Ok, so I have been advertising in the local paper, postcard sized card adverts in local shop windows, business cards in all the local tile shops / kitchen & bathroom shops.... All friends and family been given cards as well... Website up and running, Yell.com listing, yellow pages listing coming soon....

Not one single phone call....

Actually, tell a lie, several phone calls all cold callers wanting to sell me more advertising at only £*** per month!

hmmm.... now what?

Did lots of leg work doing business card drops through letterboxes in my area and in 1 major car park in the town i put cards on the drivers doors, got some work to start me off from both sources! Mind numbingly boring but it has paid for itself.

You only need one good tile shop counter guy to like you and he'll get you your work for you. Go back to the shops on a regular basis in your van on a busy day and be sure to meet the customers too.

Your website wants to rank for 'tiler in XXXXX' to get business from it and personally I found no great quantity of customers calling me when I've advertised in Yellow pages or on Yell.com

A letter to a couple of plumbers or related traders saying you'll pass them plumbing work if you get tiling work in return sometime can also help get your name about.

Try thinking outside the box a bit. If you're sitting in your home next to the phone waiting you're not doing everything you can do maybe?

I bet you there are Gypsy traders working today somewhere and I bet they don't have a chance of a single lead. I'm not saying knock on doors and cold call old ladies or anything but generally don't sit by the phone waiting for calls.

Adding a few more strings to your bow can help. If you can advertise yourself as a bathroom fitter or kitchen fitter you'd probably find a few more calls would come in. I think sometimes with a tiler being a finishng tradesmen you generally miss out on some of the work you COULD do but don't get offered due to you being advertised as just a tiler.

Yet knocking up stud-walls and doing other types of flooring is something only a step away from a good tiler.

Well, I will keep trying then.... Just found out today that someone I know who works for an insurance company doing tiling has spent the last month doing everything BUT tiling........ Guess not many people want new tiles at the moment! lol

Getting my name about anyway... landed a painting job of all things... can't turn down work though!
