Non-slip adhesive?

So I was talking to a tiler on a bathroom job we been doing today and today was his 1st day there to begin tiling
and as he had finished setting out i asked him so now you will need some battens fixed up to the walls right?
according to him Bal white star is a non-slip adhesive so there is no need for battening up.
The walls have had a spread of hard wall on them and have been scratched to achieve a good key so the adhesive will just pull to the tiles to the wall. give them 10 mins to go off and then you are good to go.

Is this right and is there any special techniques for this method?

What tiles were they and what is he doing tiling directly to hardwall????

Not sure on the size exactly but they were a generous size ceramic wall tile from tile giant I think?

as for tiling on hardwall forgive me if I am wrong but shouldn't a primer of been used first?

It should have had a finish coat of plaster, British Gypsum state that tiling onto gypsum undercoats should'nt be, the size of the tiles could be an issue as well.

If a coat of finish was applied would the substrate still require priming and can you really get a Non-slip adhesive that dismisses the use of battens?

As for the tiles I say generous I think they were a pretty standard size, mind you I ain't too clued up on tile sizes really to be honest LOL

tiling onto hardwall is a no for me , as for tubbed adhesive thats a no imo, although white star is one of the better tubbed adhesives i still would,nt use it

Bal tubbed adhesive can only be used for tiles up to 300 x 300,it will hold to a certain degree but if not skimming walls, imo they should be, prime with Sbr and use powder adhesive then again your tiler should know all this.

What brands of adhesive would you recommend?

I would have give it a go myself I have some experience and I defo would of used a primer too.
But I really need to develop my speed as I take my time with tiling and sometimes get worried customers may get annoyed with the time it takes me to complete the job.

"non slip" adhesives are tested using 150x150mm white tiles and they allow 0.5mm slippage, tobe classed non slip.
So some form of battens should always be used when starting halfway up.

A good well mixed SPF will hang a 60x30 to a datum all day long.

I don’t hang large format tiles so much but smaller tiles I always hang battens are for girls rrr:

Why are you bothered so much LB? the customer employed the tiler, and if the customer is unhappy, then they will take it up with the said tiler. Are you employed on the job to something else? Leave the tiler alone, everyone has to learn by their own mistakes.
