Discuss Not my ideal 1st Job, but..... in the British & UK Tiling Forum area at TilersForums.com.

Hello, been at college on an evening ICA course for 6months, Anyway my missus has got me a job.. gulp. Friends bathroom. Just a few question, to re-asure me.
1. Its a newish house with a chip board floor. Was thinking to use 6mm Backiboard, Am I right in saying I will only need to screw this down?
2. I would prefer to tile under the toilet, but am scared to death of unscrewing it and causing more problems, I have never done anything like this, (I am not a plumber), call me thick but, If I do decide to unscrew it, do you turn water off and empty it? Do you then completely tile underneath and drill holes in tiles??. (Its stuff like this that you don,t learn at college).
3. Also, you can,t lift the sink pedestal if there are tiles around it, on the wall. So I will have to tile around this. Would it be right to tile around one and under the other?
When tiling around it, do you grout upto the pedestal, or silicon upto it?
Sorry for so many questions
I know... It looks like I haven,t even been to college. Just want to do a professional job, to get recommended.
Hey I can only get better.

Thanks in advance

You have a short travel area so little deflection personaly I would lay an 8x4 6mm ply over it to cross the joints, pva on floor first then nail/screw every 6 inch. ( trick when you finish fixing tap over it with a hammer holding it loosly where/if the hammer bounces you need another nail)

2. I would prefer to tile under the toilet, but am scared to death of unscrewing it and causing more problems, I have never done anything like this, (I am not a plumber), call me thick but, If I do decide to unscrew it, do you turn water off and empty it? Take it out, there is a balafix valve on the incoming water line (its silver switch it off by turning the screw to horizontal, flush toilet then move it away, tile grout then replace

3. Also, you can,t lift the sink pedestal if there are tiles around it, on the wall. So I will have to tile around this. Would it be right to tile around one and under the other?

Yes leave it there and tile up to it if you keep it tight then grout it if.

Bathroom floor is a pain even worse as first job. When your starting remember one thing when cutting peds and wc's...........Practice, if you break one get another one and go on till u get it right you will find your way and become good at it. Customers will always love you for nice tidy cuts and pick up a few extra tiles if you need them.

Go for it m8
