We have just pulled up our old kitchen porcelain floor tiles as we are going to be laying new slate ones in a few weeks. The porcelain ones were laid by us about 4 years ago. They were very easy to pull up, but once up we noticed that the adhesive was so crumbly like a powder in a lot of places.
We did have a leak in the shower above which must have been going down to the kitchen floor behind the cabinets and seeping under the floor tiles - can this degrade the adhesive? It was just tubbed adhesive that was used.
The leak has been fixed now, but we do not want the new tile adhesive to fail. We will be using Mapei bagged adhesive next time not tubbed stuff. We have pulled up all of the old adhesive and and bitumen residue from the previous old vinyl floor tiles. And Scrubbed the concrete floor.
Do we need to add any sealant to the concrete? Is it worth considering anything else?
Many thanks!
