Currently working on an old cottage, the owners asked me today if I could do anything with one of the landing walls.

Its a feature wall on the stairs in original 'rough' unfinished stone that has been painted in white paint - looks pretty think. Customer desperately wants to get it back to the original stone finish but hasn't a clue how to go about it.... I wouldn't know where to start either!

Anyone got any ideas what can be used or how to go about this? At a guess I'd say the area is about 4m.sq.

Cheers Chris

sandblast it.
:yikes:
done it at our place in france over granite block..very messy and time consuming, but the only thing that shifted decades of paint everything else was twice as long winded and half as effective!

you can hire the gear, 4m2 is not a bad size to do either, just remember your dustsheets!

That would be an option - If they hadn't had new cream carpets fitted upstairs.... I've had a dozen dust sheets down whilst working on the bathrooms. I'll suggest it to the customer though, just to see the look on her face!! Cheers.

Wire brush and a large pot of elbow grease?

Why do people do it? I remember a friend got some really nice stone to mark out the grass verge outside a customers house. He said thanks theyll look really nice in white!

Is there anything that can be mixed in with the 'elbow grease' to make the job easier?!

I know its a real shame as the house is absolutely stunning, previous owners obviously had some strange ideas!

Could try this instead of grit blasting.
Dry ice blasting has many unique and superior benefits over traditional blasting media.

Dry ice blasting:
  • is a non-abrasive, nonflammable and nonconductive cleaning method
  • is environmentally-friendly and contains no secondary contaminants such as solvents or grit media
  • is clean and approved for use in the food industry
  • allows most items to be cleaned in place without time-consuming disassembly
  • can be used without damaging active electrical or mechanical parts or creating fire hazards
  • can be used to remove production residues, release agents, contaminants, paints, oils and biofilms
  • can be as gentle as dusting smoke damage from books or as aggressive as removing weld slag from tooling
  • can be used for many general cleaning applications
Cold Jet dry ice blasting uses compressed air to accelerate frozen carbon dioxide (CO2) "dry ice" pellets to a high velocity. A compressed air supply of 80 PSI/50 scfm can be used in this process. Dry ice pellets can be made on-site or supplied. Pellets are made from food grade carbon dioxide that has been specifically approved by the FDA, the EPA and the USDA.
Carbon dioxide is a non-poisonous, liquefied gas, which is both inexpensive and easily stored at work sites.

soda blasting is used to srip paint from stone as it doesnt damage the substrate

but for a small area like this I would use paint stripping sheets, you coat the wall with nitromors gel and push the plastic sheet over it and leave for 24 hrs. when you strip the sheets off the wall the paint comes away cleanly

obviously its not the nicest of stuff to use so carefull sheeting is required, I tape plastic sheet down first , taping the edges , then dust sheets then ply pushed up againgst the wall

all the instructions come with the kit and its the cleanest way so far to strip paint from stone , wood , iron etc

Thanks Enduro - Do you know a company that specialises in this? Bit out of my league I think! Cheers Chris

Thanks Mike - Would this work on rough, unfinished stone or is it more suited to smooth areas? Many thanks Chris
