Hi people,
I have just started a job tonight and the walls are painted i think it's dry lining? anyway i did the tape test on all the walls and there were some areas that flaked off pretty easy which im pretty worried about.will i have to sand all the paint off all four walls or shall i just sand off the flaky bits and carry on aas normal.? Im working with large format tiles so dont really want to risk the chance of them falling off. what's the best course off action? Ive left quite a few bits of cellotape on the walls overnight and if it comes off with paint on in the morn then im thinking all the walls need sanding. is there any other tests i can do? If possible i dont want to sand all the paint off as this will set me right back as then i will need to sugar saop wait for it to dry, prime again, then start to sort the walls out with rapid set as there is a few areas that hare about an inch out! Any suggestions. Sorry for the late and long post. Your help is appreciated.:mad2:

I have had the same problem before, and with glazed tiles, I normally clean the surface well, then use dunlop set fast plus which sets to glazed surfaces like concrete, dries fast too so you can grout after 3 hours with no signs of worry. To be extra sure, score frequently and skim the surface with set fast plus and back the tile with adhesive. Unfortunately you will have to coat all the tiles individually.

I would go with your own solution. Tape up the walls with some strong duck tape and if paint is coming off fairly easily then it's going to cause you problems. If i were in you situation I would explain the problem to the customer and knock the job back half a day.

Clean and prep the substrate (as you have already identified) to ensure that the tiles will grab properly, working with a large format tile with a weak layer of paint is definately not desirable.

Sorry I can't be of more help, but the bottom line is its better to lose half a day than have a load of tiles fall off and an unhappy customer.

Yeah i think if im going to have to skim the walls then back butter all the tiles then its propably going to be just as easy if not easier to sand all the walls. Cheers for the responses lads. Better to be safe than sorry. I have explained this already to the customer and he said just do whatever i think will be for the best so that's always a plus that the customer is willing and understands that things need to be done properley.

If the walls are really bad and you dont want to sand all walls down, you could always take the rough stuff off and dot and dab new plasterboard on the walls.
would this not be the same as tiling onto a painted surface? But instead of tiling onto paint you are dot dabing on to a painted surface with the dot dab coming away?

Just trying to understand Brian
