i think that cbtc got it all in his post it definately is all to do with the timing , soaking the paper and using the right adhesive(slow setting), joints should be regulated once the paper is taken off with a plasterers steel float ,the paper will virtually fall off by itself and you wont pull the mosaic off the bed if you allow plenty of time for the paper to soak, dont allow it to dry out but dont over wet it either , dont try and clean the gumm off the tiles straight away as all the washing will disturb your work, use warm water at the end of the day to clean back what you have done ,however dont leave it until the following day either ,as the grout mixes with the gum and it is a nightmare to remove, all learnt by my own mistakes ,I actually prefer paper faced mosaic and pre grouting as i feel it is easier to acheive a more regular finish and the overall look has a fuller looking grout joint as you are effectively grouting your work twice ,a handy tip when pre grouting is to use a spot board and stand ,dont grout too many sheets before you fix them ,as, as you pick them up they will fall apart in you hands, the spot board will allow you a nice flat surface to prepare the sheets and pull the grout off the back of the tiles and only leave it in the joints also dont mix you grout up too sloppy either, hope these few pointers will be of help to you good luck with the job
