paper on emulsion

Good evening guys n gals. I'm about to start prepping a bathroom for travertine tiles, BUT the walls have been emulsioned then papered, so i'm going to be left with paste on top of emulsion, on plasterboard walls. how would you prep this?

scrape the paper off and sand the paint off with a sander i wouldnt put travetine on a painted wall
