planning permission

hello all,does anyone know if i was to install a velux window in my attic would i need planning permission,its not part of a conversion just simply wanting to fit a window? ta

if in doubt, stick in an application. better it be rejected cos it's not needed than get screwed over cos it was neeeded.

as far as I know theres no need for permission but a call to building control will answer that for you

I don't think you would need planning permission under most authorities but you may need to get building regulations approval due to the constraints over insulation values and the like. If you were replacing old with new then provided the unit can be seen to exceed the minimum regulation in terms of thermal performance then you don't even need that. I found that out myself recently when I replaced some dormers in my loft conversion.

if it was part of a conversion Jamie, I know that there's quite strict building regs in England and Wales regarding the positioning of skylights, they have to be accessible to emergency services using a ladder in case of fire. I think it's something like 900mm from the gutter. I'll have a look today and see if I can find anything

there is no regulations in scotland for this because it doesn't affect anyone else however you will need to make sure it is done to spec.i.e the new homeowners selling guide as above all to do with fire/heat regs
