Hi

I am in the process of re doing my bathroom, the tiles on the plasterboard walls are coming off ok so no probs there, but on the walls that have been plastered (the external wall) I am pulling the skim coat off, leaving just the thistle underneath.

Can I dot n dab Platerboard directly onto the thistle coat or does it need to be skimmed first??

I know this isnt strictly a tiling question, but I will be tiling onto the plasterboard afterwards!

thanks

what backing paster is it??? tough coat? browning? hardwall dry coat etc
seems odd that the finish plaster has come away nicely from the backing plaster, how long has it been on the wall for? aslong as it doesnt sound hollow when you tap it and its not flaky/damp or anything then you'll be find to dot and dab straight onto it, just make sure the tiles + adhesive dont exceed 32kg per m2

EDIT: sorry i missread it and thought u was taking all the finish plaster off out of choice :S, aslong as the surface is stabel any not flakey/hollow then you can dot n dab more board on and tile over or you could use some rapid setting floor adhesive and fill out the bits thats come away to make smooth again etc

Hi

I cant patch up unfortunately, due to the fact around 75% of the skim coat came off with the tiles.

I will be tiling again with ceramics, nothing too heavy maybe 300mm x 200mm max.

I like the idea of tiling onto plasterboard due to its nice flatness, also I will have to get a plasterer in etc to reskim and then wait for a few days for it to dry properly etc

ah not too old then, aslong as its all stuck well to the brickwork you'l b fine to dot n dab some board on and tile straight onto that  just make sure it is firmly still grippig in place

When the adhesive has gone off use some machanical fixing thru to the existing brick/blockwork where the dabs are just to make sure

Andy, every time I see your aviator I want to go shooting with a gofer

Having a beer is so passe

One option the OPs got if the plasterwork is in bad condition and the wall may suffer damp is to re render then float off with sand/cement mix with a bit of lime, then tile straight onto that.
