ply wood ??

hey guys, been trawling through the forum and have come across an re-occuring difference of opinions on if you can tile straight on to plywood. i Can see the advantage of priming the base side and then screwing down but does this substrate not expand and contract over time, would this be a case when a flexible addy is used would the moisture in the addy not effect the ply or should a decoupling matt be used ????

i never like tiling on wood. i'd rather plasterboard over the ply and tile onto that or remove the wood if depth/thickness doesn't allow this and reboard with plasterboard or backer

One thing about this forum is that you see methods developing and improving. A lot of tilers are now veering away from tiling on ply but if you do, always read the adhesive manufacturers instructions re prime or not, and its always rapid set so moisture is not sat there, for a day.

this is why most adhesive manufactures advise to use rapidset on ply to stop the water going into the wood where a normal setting adhesive would let to much moisture in took to long typing this you beat me to it lol

IMO tiling on wood/ply should be avoided at all costs, there is no need for it to be used in this day and age there is so many alternatives (hardi-backer,no more ply etc...) all of which are of a reasonable price and are easier to use and cut and create a far superior tiling bond than ply.

my preference is plasterboard or NMP, but have had to tile to ply when client refused to pay the extra. Plasterboard doesn't cost that much i know and have thought about paying for it myself.

i know plaster boards cheap ive done a bit of dryling in the past you wouldnt put plaster board on the floor would you or have i just read into that wrong ??

I think he means plasterboard on the walls over the ply and cement boards on the floor

I had to read it twice myself!
