Plywood over floorboards

Hi, i am going to do some tiling and upstairs on the floor there are flooboards. What size plywood do i need to put down to tile on?

Can you take the floorboards up as this will keep your height down, what size floor, any bounce in it, what tile type and size.

15mm british standard minimum.

If you can i would lift floor boards add extra dwangs (noggins) to strengthen floors & lay min 18mm ply then overboard with 6mm backerboards.

That way you should only be 6/8mm above where your floor level is now.

Try & take out all deflection on the floor, Good prep = Good floor.

Tile Backer Boards, a few different manufacturers, depends where in the country you are & what tile stores you have.

You could order them from 1 of the forum sponsors, PHG wetrooms or U-Heat.

As Alan said above, what tiles & what size?

The tiles are 200x400. The floor is quite small. About 4 square metres. The whole job is 13 metres square. All walls are solid brick. So do i dot and dab aqua board onto those?

When you say "solid brick", whats covering the bricks? Bonding then plaster?

I would lift the old floorboards, 2 reasons, 1) so as to be able to add extra noggins to stop any deflection ( bounce ) 2) to keep the overall finished floor height to a minimum. Once the old boards are up and nogins in, 15 - 18mm wbp ply, fixed at 300mm centres, prime the underside and side edges of the ply before fixing, do this with an SBR primer, your local supplier will know. Then fix your backerboards down with a decent flexi adhesive.

To be honest, am not sure what the walls are prepped with, they have tiles on them already, which need to be removed. But i have come across some old houses that cemented the tiles on. And when i had to take them off, i basically had to rip all the old render off right back to brick. So, i am just thinking the worst here

Hi Rich, thanks for that Link, that is great! Just one question though, when you say to use the cement backer boards, do you mean put this straight on top of the floorboards/ Or do you take the boards up and put these straight onto the joists?

The cement boards go over the existing boards, they don't have enough strength on their own.

So, if i wanted to remove the floorboard, i would have to put 18mm ply, and then the cement boards on top of those? But then, this would be pretty much the same height as the original floorboards any way wouldn't it.

It would be the same height but a deflection free floor if done right and an ideal substrate to tile onto

Sorry, I may not have been clear in the thread that I linked to, the backer boards are for over boarding and are not suitable for fixing straight onto the joists. The heights are irrelevant, you need to get floor suitable for tiling and removing the floor boards and replacing with min 15mm wbp ply and over boarding with 6mm backers would be the best way of doing that. If the floor boards are in good nick (no rot or damage then you could over board straight over these as long as you could fix them down so that they were bounce free.

Your mimimum tile backerboard overlay on T&G boards or chipboard / plywood would be 10mm, standard flexi adhesives offer no guarantee if any less.

10mm eeeeek!!! 15mm should be minimum for ply shouldnt it and chip board is not good for tiling........
