Porcelain floor tiles outside?....

Hi,

We've tiled our hall in what the pack says are "fine glazed porcelain tiles". The tiler commented they were v good quality "....the type laid in shopping arcades, so hard wearing they should look the same 20 years from now...". The tiles are stone effect and we have them with silver/grey grouting.

At one end of the hall is an external full-pane glass door leading to a very small outdoor area covered by an arched canopy (..part of the house if you can imagine). The area is currently laid with red quarry tiles (I think), but we would like to replace these with more of the tiles we've laid inside so the inside and outside continue as one.

Can these type of porcelain tiles be laid outside? Although the area is semi-covered, we are on t'hills in Yorkshire so sometimes harsh conditions. Is there anything special needs to be done - any special grout, adhesive etc?

Check what the adhesive and grout manufacturers recommendation that you will be using, protect the addy and grout from frost for 48 hours after there've been laid otherwise it could be a cause of failure if you get frost or it's below 5 degrees.

Hello,as for outside,I think the natural stone,like granite,andesite,basalt,ect, are more workable.The flamed,bush-hammered could be done with the anti-slip function.And stone is more durable.

The tiles you mention are all natural which will cause them to react as all stone does with frost, drying etc.

Porcelain does not react and is to all intense and purpouses frost proof, providing they do not have an unsafe surface porcelain is for use outside every time..............

A waterproof powdered floor adhesive and grout should be used (general one)

The tiles have a matt finish so shouldn't be slippery when wet. We'll see how it goes!
