Hi Everyone. Just questioning a price that I have just given. Would be interested to know what other people would have quoted to see if I am in right ball park.
Here goes. Approx 15 m2 wall tiling using 10" x 8" ceramic tiles. They also want mosaic border (approx 15 metres) plus listello both on top of and below the mosaic border. Also 4 metres floor tiling (Tiles not yet purchased but will be ceramic and approx 330 x 330) Floor is floorboards at present but is in need of boarding out / repairing to enable tiling to take place. Was going to repair damaged floor and go straight onto floorboards with Ardex 7001 as floor is generally quite solid. Will need to cut out round toilet as toilet fitted and built into cupboards. What estimate would you guys have put on this job?? I quoted £600 including all materials!!

Sorry guys, it was only an estimate - Not a quote. Customer obviously not too happy with price though as they are getting another tiler in to estimate the job later this week. I thought it was a fair price but obviously they didnt!! Thanks for all your input. I hope the tiler who goes later this week is a higher price, then when they phone me up to do the job, I will tell them where to stick it as I am not that desperate. After all, if they couldnt take my word on a recommendation, then I am not sure I want the job now anyway. I know that is probably cutting my own nose to spite my face but hey!! I wouldnt have minded but it is for a friend of a friend and I was asked to go round on recommendation to estimate the job because they know I do an excellent job and quality is paramount to me even if it means it takes an extra day or so at no additional cost to the customer and I would always go back to a job if any issues arose in future., unlike some!

It would be a shame if you did that. £600 is a lot of money for most people, and to be fair, they may be treating it the same as any other work they may need doing - getting 2 or 3 estimates. Doesn't mean to say they aren't going to use you, that is just how business works. If it was a friend then maybe get a bit miffed, but as it is a 3rd party recommendation, I think it is only fair to themselves that they check out other tradesmen as well. You never know the other guys might quote double your rate and they might then give you a bonus.

Hope that the other tiler charges less and gets the job.....then hope he does a crap job and they call you to put right....then you can tell them to kiss it...or charge them double...

Mark.

That was also on my mind Mark. Nothing better than I told you so is there! - Lol.
Not sure I would go back to do job though even if the other tiler made a mess of things. They have mithered me for a month to go and do the estimate and also asked when could I fit job in as I have been really busy. So when estimate was given and still asked when I could do job, thought everything was OK. Then 2 days later get a phone call to say they are getting another tiler to estimate the job, I was a bit miffed to say the least. Will see what happens!!
