hi guys,

this is my my debut post in the arms, good to be here.

went to look at a job in mayfair london today and my head started spinning with pricing it.
town house needs five bathrooms tiled, floors and walls, skirting in all some has coving as well.
300x600 in most of the rooms, smaller tiles in others.

was asked to give a meter price but this is my first job like this and don't want to under price it. been told i can do it on a day rate and can expect up to £180 which is good money cause there's about 5 weeks work i reckon. thing is i really want to learn my trade well and that also involves walking into a job like this and knowing what to charge.
my mate who is on the job says i'll get what i want cause the guy is loaded and just wants it done but i dont wanna be stupid and put pressure on myself. :huh2:

advice appreciated.

My advice would be to forget about day rates and meterage rates for the time being, price it on what the job is worth to you, this way you won't be putting yourself under pressure to work faster... for your customer as when on day rate...or for yourself when on meterage. When you have got your speed and confidence up you will be more at ease pricing on a day rate or meterage rate. Hope this makes sense, it does to me..lol
Mark.

I would be rethinking a £180 a day. It simply isn't enough for a job like that. Think about how many floors you are working on? Parking? Congestion Charges? etc, etc

hear what your both saying.
you know what it's like, the question is always whats your meter price? and because its kind of a big job not knowing the total area of the walls or the floor it's difficult to give a figure. i'm not sure how long it'll take so dont wanna uder price.

babbling a bit i know sorry. thing is i feel that a day rate is too easy option, like i'm copping and not making the most of it.

hi mate its not easy-ok try and think how long each bathroom is going to take-3 days/a week??

also why didnt you measure up if you were there?what tiles are they?how much prep?

if you want to cover yourself go for a dayrate-£180 a day sounds ok

next time take a tape

sounds like im on your case-sorry .what im getting at is-you can measure up AND estimate time to give you a rough m2 rate

If your not that experienced allow 3/4 days per room and go for the day rate plus expenses eg parking congestion charge etc and use it as a learning curve you will find out how long each aspect takes you to do and remember for the future. And you cant price a job just by looking.... Allways measure make notes and dont give the price there and then do your homework then you can give an informed price and you wont sell yourself short..

was difficult to measure up as it is still a bit of a building site and was looking at it whilst also working over other side of london so was pushed for time.
decided to do it on a price. £150 a day, once gear is there will be able to train it.
been told there are another two in the pipe line so i will know once i finish this job whether i made the right decision.

traveling will cost me bout £15 a day and is coming out of my day rate. been tiling less than a year so need the contacts and although not earning massive on this i feel i will learn not only on the manual side but also pricing and time scale of jobs.
will do my best on this job and hopefully on the next ones that comes up i'll make up for it on those.

Pursedog, this sounds like a great opportunity for you. If you are happy with £150 then that's great. It's good to hear that others are charging more. I'm on site at the moment and i'm getting £85 a day. So you should be very pleased with your regular salary. To earn my £85 I have to travel from West London to South London (just avoiding the congestion charge). It takes me from 1.5 hours to over 3 hours each way. If I could get there by tube then I would. If I were you I would sus out the transport links and get the tube/train/bus each day. It's cheaper and will give you time to read/listen to your ipod/do your books on your laptop/sleep etc. Obviously you would have to leave some/all your equipment on site. You come across as a decent bloke, as your £150 a day fee has not been swayed by the expensive location and the rich client. Good luck to you. Sean
