Priming - your views

Good evening all. I thought I'd just start this thread to see what the more experience tiles on this forums thoughts are in relation to priming various substrates, ie which primer you find best, how many times you prime the different substrates prior to tiling etc.

Tilemaster primer for me and what ever the manufacturer reccomends .

I use sbr I don't use a particular make it's all the same

Many will say prime everything you can, but IMO you're creating an extra layer that could fail if you're using it just on everything.

Plaster and Cement don't mix. So you need a good quality primer there to create a layer that's stopping the two from touching each other.

Other than that it's usually down to the products you're using and whether they say they need it.

You can obviously help keep a dusty floor free from dust if you clean it then prime it, but generally if you just sprinkle a bit of water on it after a good sweep you'll do the same and not create an extra layer there.

Primarily use SBR but if it's something specific then I would use the correct primer

Use the same brand primer as the adhesive you are going touse and follow instructions

Hello. Thanks for all the quick responses. I use ardex p51 and mix as recommended on the bottle. How many times would you all prime. I guess it's probably dependant on which substrate you're priming but is there an amount of times you stick to for each particular substrate.

Usually SBR cos thinned it goes a long way. Normally prime once unless the substrate is very porous or the dreaded anhydrate.

I'm in the prime everything camp. Usually pr360 as I use webber products.

Usually pr 360 or Larsen acrylic , I never prime plasterboard and usually only give the substrate one coat unless very porus or anhydrate screeds !
