Quarry tiles

Hi all

I know traditionally quarry tiles were laid using sand & cement or sand & lime, but can you use a flexi adhesive like dunlop fast set?

Also do i need to seal them first as they are quite porous, if so what is the best way to do this before fixing or before grouting?

Anything else quarry tile related things I should know before laying these?

Matt - first thing you should check is that they are Quarry tiles!

Traditional Quarries have a very low porosity level ( don't accept moisture) and are frostproof and thats why they are mainly used outside.
You can fix them with sand/cement or adhesive depending on the substrate and although the were at one time given a rub with oil, this was generally just to 'lustre' the surface.

they are going onto concrete and a small amount of timber floor I believe

I was always told rub linseed oil in to quarry tiles to add lustre and "seal" them. I did that on my quarries and it was ok. I placed them using the french wet bed method but i did something wrong cos they started delaminating. I going to take them up soon clean them up and re lay them.
On the ones I laid outside as front path I laid them with Wickes exterior tile addy and they have stuck like wotsit to a blanket despite rain, frost, snow and sun. Will use same stuff when I relay indoors as well unless advice from forum screams not to do so.

porous..?...which quarry are they..?

My mistake, I thought they might be porous, so no need to seal them if they arn't porous.

My Dad laid his 30 years ago in his utility room and no sealer, still looked spotless a couple of years ago

matt bed them in a grey flexi addy use flexi because of the part ply substrate and a flexi grout they will be fine
