I have built a house using Kabedeck and yes its good stuff against moisture, even chipped up with tools and boots it doesn’t explode like normal chipboard in the damp. We are going to see more and more of it as the builders can overcome health and safety issues with using it on the final lifts above first floor. You either insert your waterproof flooring early (i.e. Kaberdeck) so the brickies can do the final lifts and the chippies can get on with joists etc or we are looking at nets and bags at first floor level.
Anyway, my worry about it ref tiles is that the chippies will insert this not considering defection levels required for tiles. Yes they will aim for a solid no bounce floor but with the tongue and grooves they can easily get away with the boards overfloating the joists and therefore only being supported by the adjacent tongue and groove. Any leverage pressure IMHO could be transferred across the first floor construction to the outer construction boards, and guess where the bathroom typically is! Its for these reasons (i.e. I couldn’t for the life of me guarantee where all my noggins were, even with my photo album) that I overboarded after putting extra screws through the Kaberdeck to the joists. Even though I think the Kaberdeck is mechanically very sound, for the cost I just didn’t take the risk.
As an addendum for this discussion, if I’d have known about the N&C Plastic Ply at the time I would have used it. Saw it assembled onto a crappy old warehouse pallet using single part Nicobond flex recently and it worked really well. Would think this product is perfect for use over Kaberdeck as we are not after the adhesion provided by a backer board (ref the Mapei gear and other posters here having success), we are just after a no flex no bounce guarantee, the Plastic Ply I think would give this (ref labour its dead cheap being easy cut and smallish sheets) – but I have not used it personally - yet.
{seems some respected posters on here tiled straight on with success – maybe I should have been braver, next time I check my noggins better!}
