I have just had a lady on the telephone wanting me to quote for her kitchen, 30m2, concrete floor and she doesnt know whether the tiles are porcelain or ceramic as they are not with her. I suggested bal flexi adhesive with a 2-4mm grout line, again she does not know the size. Is this correct advice?

They are and very black and was wondering what colour grout to go with. I suggested black, however she then said she has a brickbond border to go around the room so using grey would enhance the border.

Thinking about price without the border I came to around the £700 mark including materials however as there is this border I am not too sure.

any help appreciated.

(by god, where would I be without TF and you guys?!!?!?!)

thanks

Hi Cameron, fist thing don't just give a price over the phone, some one will always undercut you on the phone. Always try and see the job because you can make sure the floor is 'OK', and you can strike up a relationship better and if she likes you she won't go anywhere else!

Personally, I don't use 2mm grout lines on a floor, usually 4 sometimes 3!

Don't bother baffling the customer with the brand of adhesive just say it's top of the range!

£700 is probably just a little heavy for me if it's a straight forward square room, with little floor prep. Depends on the type of border she wantswhether or not to add another day on. Maybe a bit more to include the border. Not much difference between ceramic and porcelaine if have included Flexi addy in your price.

Grey grout will be fine.

Is this your first job? If so take your time setting the border out.

Good Luck!

 very good advice John, and also the advice "talk dogs" resp. "talk garden".

Grumpy, it is his first job, give him some working time by using normal setting addy. There will be possibilities working with the fast setting ones when he is more experienced.

You are right of course but the point I was trying to really get over was that he didn't need to use BAL flexy adhesive as the rapidset is cheaper. I would have been better maybe to suggest Gold Star instead.

Well lads I have been across. Met an amazingly attractive young lady who I thought must be about 25/26, is 34, with son, Fred the bassett hound and a fiance.

Shoes were off at the door (I always do, people who don't in mine get told lol) and the measuring up began. Yet again we have a victim of B&Q tiles however she now knows that I can get discount for her in the future.
The job is not as easy to me as it seems as there is a border to go all the way around the room, into utility and into the wc. With time, like all jobs it will be ok I assume.

I didnt sweat, measured up, took a sketch of the room layout, talked about the dog, asked about how long she had lived here (turns out born and bred) all her life though the age gap is probs how I haven't met her. She even ended up doing roly-poly's in front of me for her kid. I was creased with laughter and so was she.

Now I just need to work out a price...may need some help here. I'll post the correct size up soon.

The border is one tile with brickbond style in it if you get me ! I haven't even seen the tile yet, I'm just going by her description! Got the style and that so gonna check out the FNQ website now.

Another thing I wondered, as the border is in this brickbond pattern , what happens when I get to the start and it does not meet up, also what about when I come to door frames corners etc.

Quite an issue I think ?

This is the tile
Colorado Floor Tile Charcoal, 5010921312293
This is the border
Colorado Border Tile COLO7B Charcoal Coloured 38.5 x 7cm, 5010921325651

So now are my chioces correct with regards to addy and grout.

thanks
