I'm new to tiling. So tell me if i'm wrong. I 'Estimate' a job price. to me a 'Quote' seems too set in stone. So, my estimate in theory could be higher or lower than the actual price the customer pays me for the job. on the .

A quote is legally binding, if you quote a job that is the price, so for arguments sake....if you quoted to take down some tiles and make good the walls and then tile and grout and you quote a price of £350, you then come along to do the job, you rip down the old tiles and the wall comes down with them and it is going to cost an extra £400 to put the walls right, you cannot legally ask for a penny more than the £350 you quoted...and it is your job to put it right.
It would be advisable to estimate then you can quite rightly adjust the price, should something unforseen happen, yes people say that you can quote higher to cover the cost if anything goes wrong but that way you are starting off overcharging.
I explain to all of my customers that it is an estimate and that if anything unforseen comes up, I will inform them and discuss it with them as the cost will require adjusting...rarely happens but it can....occasionally.

Mark.

A quote is binding over here as well. The trick is to specify what it covers.
If you specify reboarding, waterproofing, leveling and tiling (setting tiles and grouting), then that's what it covers. If the circumstances change, and, for example, there's water damage in the underlying construction, then you discuss it with the customer, explaining it's an unforseen complication, and that it's going to cost extra.

If the customer doesn't accept that, you're free to claim pay for what you've already done, and walk.

If you however, only specify "renovation of mr and mrs x's bathroom", then you're stuck, if the added cicumstances are within the limits of what could be considered a bathroom renovation.
