Went to look at a kitchen splashback tonight and as a quick fix after they installed the kitchen, they decided to paint straight onto the plasterboard. There was no mist coat, just straight on with emulsion.

I put a bit of tape on the wall, left for 10 mins and when I pulled it off, the paint and a bit of the plasterboard paper came off. (I did it in a corner where its no too noticeable!).

I suggested getting the walls skimmed before tiling (they have picked white metro tiles), so nothing too heavy going on the walls.

I'm thinking more about it now and does anyone foresee any issues with simply gluing (gripfill or similar) and screwing (with drywall plugs and screws) a bit of plasterboard over the top of the existing plasterboard? (If possible, I'm thinking this would mean I could tile same day rather than waiting a couple of weeks for the skim to dry).

Thanks all.

A few suggestions there - they want it done with as much disruption and mess to the rest of the kitchen as possible. I might give the wiping down a go and see how easy it comes off. I'm sure they would appreciate as will consideralbly cut down on disrupton.

Wallpaper steam stripper or skim cheap tubbed adhesive onto the paint will remove it sharpish.

Out of interest (and for future reference), how long would you leave the tubbed adhesive on before scraping it back off?

On one

Depends on the type of paint, the amount of coats of paint, the amount of adh...... But,skim the adh on the paint, get the rest of your gear set up, have a brew and start scraping where you first applied the adh. It is sometimes that quick if it is just a couple of coats of emulsion
