Hi
I have been asked to re-tile a bathroom..
I have no problems taking the old tiles off as they are on solid walls, but can i just put new adshive over the old stuff? or would it be better to skim the walls first?
Cheers

Some much more experienced peeps will be along soon but I will say that the wall will probably not be uin a very good condition with adhesive still attached, divets and flaky plaster everywhere so a re skim would be best, you may be lucky our house had not been touched since it was built in 1975 and the kitchens tiles just fell off leaving an almost perfect adhesive free surface, maybe they used sellotape in the 70's

I personally would get the wall as flat as possible, with as little effort as possible! Not one for tiling over lumps and bumps, me!

Grumpy

scrape old adhesive off and if any plaster comes away fill it with rapid set ,its quicker than tiling over bad surfaces and a lot less demoralising!!

advise the customer that until tiles have been removed there is no knowing what prep is required..so you cannot fully commit yourself to price ..Gaz

Always, as Gaz has rightly said, always tell the customer that you can only price up the prep work once you have removed the tiles.

As for what you'll fine under them, it all depends on the walls condition wether a reskim is required or not, and generally try to get as much old adhesive off as possible within reason.
