Could really use some sound advice.
I will be tiling my basement laundry room with 12" square ceramic tiles (that I got from my Father-inlaw) ontop of cement foundation.
The floor is plain cement over 30 years old that has a dip to the drain (opposite end of the room from where the washer and dryer will be installed). There is no detectible moisture coming up from the slab and no cracks.
I don't know which is the best option for Tiling.
1) Tile directly to the slab. - I assume unmodified thinset.
2) Apply a liquid crack isolation membrane, then tile with modified thinset.
3) Apply a sheet crack isolation membrane, then tile with modified thinset.
4) Apply uncoupling member with modified Thinset, then tile with modified thinset.
My concerns is will the heavy vibrations of the HE Washer create a bunch of movement with the isolating (or uncoupling membrane) that it will start to crack the grout? Or will it be the vise versa and prevent the tiles from being shaken loose compared to option 1?
Are options 2-3 overkill for what I need?
I also have a non-technical question, if that's not asking too much.
The tiles are a grey (with hints of beige) with a small fringe border of off white. Would the best grout colour be to match the off white?
