You can remove it with a steamer. It will be hard work but i have done it many times.
A word of warning though, some artex type compounds have been known to contain asbestos so be careful.
very wise words Neale, please be extra careful everyone, always when dealing with old artex...err on the cautious side....wear a quality mask.....Gaz

I use to do artexing with plastering, First point it all depends how well it was originaly put on, personally I would get as much off as possible. A paper steamer work's well, but god is it messy or use a scraper with the changerble 4" blade for a good scrape. One thing to remember artex contained aspestos in the early years so find out how old it is, I think it was in the mid eighties but recently companys seem to use the year 2000, men in white suits come in and remove it
