Removing tile adhesive - New tiles on old adhesive layer?

The previous owner of my house, when re-tiling the laundry, removed the existing tiles and laid the new tiles on top of the existing adhesive.

The floor is concrete so I think that the only alternative I have is to remove both layers of adhesive with a hammer and chisel.

Question: are there solutions available which can be used to soften old adhesive?

You wont soften floor tile adhesive but it is easy to remove although not with a hammer and chisel if you want fast results. An SDS drill with a chisel attachment would remove it far quicker, once its relatively smooth you could lay an SLC to cover it. Dont forget to bond the floor first with acrylic bond.

If old adhesive is strong you can put selfleveling finecoat material ( i dont know how exacly you call it in UK), finecoat -it maens even 1mm. It is much easier and no rist that you damage concrete.

Hi Bartek, you had the description right, we call it SLC, (self levelling compound) mix it with water or latex.
