Hi, there's a big difference from getting a wall skimmed & getting it flat...
I would drop that back to the brick & dryline it mate.
Sounds a lot of hassle but it ain't..

you have put this job , in the looking for a tiler section,
the best thing is to let a tiler take a look and he will give best advice, imo i would reboard all the walls, with plaster board
im not far from you , cant give a price with out looking at the job

On another note. What ever you do to the wall sort that unsightly pipework to the radiator at the same time.
Id be inclined to reboard myself.

The plan is to remove the radiator and pipes and to fit a towel rail. The pipe from celling for the soil stack we want to box in.

To fix boards to that wall would it be done by fixing battens to the wall first then the boards to them or do the boards fix direct to wall.

Boards will be fixed using dryline adhesive. Once the wall has been prepared. You could batten and board if you wish but would be more time consuming and more expensive.
Build the box work frame before boarding though.

Really it depends on the condition of the render that's there. No point removing anything that's sound.

yeh i wuld say that too if the walls not crumbling all over but theres soft spots would you just fill them in and leave the rest be?

Still not sure what you mean. From the picture posted it looks like the finish coat has come off (common) but the render is good.
In which case id knock off the rest of the finish coat, and as long as i discovered no blown render id board over.

yeh the render looks sound but theres holes in the plaster that surely need to be filled before boarding?
