Hi

I'm looking for some advice on cleaning up and sealing some old victorian red and black tiles in our hallway, which i presume are unglazed ceramic. They are very well worn and i dont want or need them to look new, but i'd like to remove as much of the dirt as possible before sealing them to keep them easier to clean in future and hopefully bring out the colour a bit more and stop them looking permanently dirty (most of them look fine when wet but dirty when dry!)

Can anyone advise on what to use to clean them, and then seal them afterwards? It is mainly years of inground dirt, but there is probably a bit of plaster residue and what looks like some old paint (that will just scrape off with some elbow grease). The central tiles are most heavily worn and are quite rough in places. I've been looking online but i'm not sure whether i should be using an acid based cleaner or not.

Many thanks for any help
Liz
