I've put my prices up by about 10% - consequently only winning about 10% of quotes now  compared to 80%!!

Got enough savings to keep me going for a while but if things don't pick up I may reconsider what I want to do. It's not that there is no work out there, because there is loads, but for my effort, hard work, attention to detail, correct materials and diesel I'm not prepared to lower my prices - would be better off stacking shelves!

Richie, first I would say and I hope you agree. Anyone who values their skills at £5 per m2. Is not a tiler, and never will be. These people are undermining our industry. Therefore damaging our (pro tilers) livelihoods'.

I am lucky, as I am sure a lot of members are, to have a good reputation. Most of my work comes from recomendations. It takes years to build up a good name, it also takes years to hone skills. Non of this comes cheap, if customers are looking for the cheapest' price, don't ring me:thumbsup:

I did a job last week for a friend who is a retired gas fitter, he insisted on a price and so I said £140 a day, (mates rates) plus materials. He never batted an eyelid, just said get on with it. A lot of people know they pay to get the job done right, he gave me £800 and everyone was happy, no snagging and no problems.

Keep your prices high to reflect your quality work, let the cowboys do the donkey work, we can then come in and do it properly when they bodge it.

i thought £8pm was low but when you see £5 :yikes:

as ive said, on certain commercial jobs i will negotiate but when it comes to the domestic scene i am aiming at a certain market...i have just got to a job this morning and the customer cancelled....get this. my husbands mate in work said he'd do it for us as a favour, so we dont need it doing now....

no phone call, no warning....i said couldnt you have give me some notice out of courtesy, she said, well thats what im doing now!!!!! and i know what people will say, hit her with a cancellation charge but is it worth the arguments, the slanging match and she probably hasnt / wont pay anyway, so i'd rather move on and put it down to experince...

so thats it for me, keeping to the side of the river where the bigger fish are....

my motto now is id rather work less for more, than work more for less
