RIW tileSafe membrane in the bathroom

We are about to use RIW tilesafe membrane in our bathroom.

We are not sure how would it be the best to apply it.

Our bathroom is 2.2 x 3.1m. We have water underfloor heating in
screed in the whole floor in the bathroom. The whole floor with walls
in the bathroom will be tiled with stone tiles. Stone tiles
(travertine) will be laid directly on the screed, where underfloor
heating is.

In one of the bathroom corner we will have 0.9 x 0.9m shower
enclosure. It will be walk in shower, meaning we will tile the floor
in the shower enclosure, making it the same level as in the rest of
the bathroom. We will not have any tray in the shower enclosure and
will be putting tiles in the shower directly on the screed (with
underfloor heating tubes in it)

Along one of the wall of the bathroom we will have a separate bath.

Our question is: Do we need to put TileSafe membrane over the
whole floor in the bathroom or would it be sufficient only to put it
on the floor and walls the shower enclosure ?

I this a walk in shower, I would be tempted to use the tile safe just in the shower area. maybe do an area of the floor outside the wet room. Is this membane the bitumen type?

If we put RIW tilesafe membrane only in shower floor area can the water somehow move from the shower floor area to other parts of the bathroom floor ? (Under tiles for instance, sorry maybe just stupid to assume this)

I have just registered on the RIW tilesafe site to check out the installation instructions for you.

APPLICATION
Prime all surfaces with RIW Tilesafe Primer and allow to dry.
Apply RIW Tilesafe Reinforcing Tape at all wall to wall, and wall to floor
junctions. Reinforcing Tape is also to be applied under all butt joints in
the main membrane. Use RIW Tilesafe Putty to seal any small voids
around pipe entries, etc.
Apply RIW Tilesafe membrane to walls and floor removing release paper
as work progresses. Joints in the membrane are butted together over the
previously applied Reinforcing Tape. A gap of 1 - 3mm is left between
the joints for later application of RIW Tilesafe Jointing Compound.
With a normal sealant gun, apply RIW Tilesafe Jointing Compound into
all butt joints.
Remove the top release film from the membrane, and tile in the
conventional manner.
Maximum weight of tile, bedding and grout for vertical applications
should not exceed 20kg/m2.

Please note the highlighted area above... you will not be able to use stone tiles when the maximum weight is only 20kg on walls.

Thanks for that info Dave, I have used this stuff a few times, but only on floors. With 100mm skirting, I am glad to learn there is a weight limit for walls. Something to avoid in the future. Good stuff though imho

Is the the same as the Impey one.? as that isn't recommended for walls.

I think I would be tempted to use a membrane over the whole floor area, to give extra peace of mind.
Having said that I think there are better products available such as those from schluter, dural and genesis.
Tilesafe is awkward and time consuming to install and does not leave a flush surface around joints and corners. It is also very expensive for what is basically a roll of self adhesive bitumen.
Most importantly Tilesafe MUST NOT COME INTO CONTACT WITH Silicon.
Silicon destroys the membrane, very strange for a product that will be used in an environment where Silicon is widely used.

I did a big hotel in Newcastle a few years ago all with this materials - Hideous stuff to install and I really struggled to find an adhesive manufacturer to gaurantee their adhesives fixing to it, PCI stuck their neck out in the end and all went well.

The builder installed the Tilesafe for us - you need to prime the substrates first then fit the floor membrane first with an upturned skirting detail. Then overlap the wall membrane over the skirting detail, taking care to peel back the plastic cover from the face at the skirting junction only.

When your ready to tile, peel off all the plastic coverings and tile as usual with a cement based single part flexible

That should just about hold Travertine ok..

I like to use Dural or schluters membranes for the walls and floors.. very easy to use and apply.

RIW are the official holders of Tilesafe in the UK and sell it on to IMPEY.............

The difficulties started some times ago when RIW slapped the weight limit on the product forcing Impey to rethink their marketing. ( you may notice impey literature doesnt feature much or any stone on the walls anymore)
