Rubi ND180 BL electric is it overkill for a DIY'er

Hi All,

I've got a 30 metre squared porcelain tile job to do (two sizes :- 600 x 300 and 400 X 400). From memory, I think the tiles are 8mm thick could be less. I read the excellent review of the Rubi ND180 wet cutter on the thread in this forum.

The question is should I go for the Rubi cutter at £132 ish plus £57 for the CPC2 diamond disc, or is this overkill for a one off DIY job. Or should I go for a generic cheaper £50 wet cutter and no CPC2 blade.

Hi Jammy.

If it is a one off, there are 2 or 3 ways of looking at it, buy the better cutter and sell on after use, buy the cheaper cutter and keep in case of, or hire a cutter for the .... erm, wet cuts, are you planning on doing all cuts, wet and dry on the wet cutter or have you got a dry cutter ? It's just time, disc life, if these are not big factors then go for a cheaper disc or 2.

I've purchased a Rubi Star N 60 plus tile cutter for the dry cuts. I'm thinking I'll need a wet cutter for the "akward" cuts. My previous tiling experience was a large-ish kitchen floor but those were smaller 300 x 300 ceramic tiles. I've not tried cutting (wet or dry) these larger 600 x 300 porcelain tiles yet. Are porcelain ones much more difficult ? I hope not.

Think I'll contact my local hire shop and see what's on offer there.

If you need a short term wet cutter, just use a wickes one, nice and cheap

where are you Jammy,maybe someone can lend you an old cutter they have lying around.If you are near Glasgow ,i will lend you a plasplugs wet cutter if you like.

Hi Jammy. The porcelain tiles are obviously harder than ceramic but will cut easily enough, 10mm wheel and a firm score, and a quick ish breaking action. I can't say anything about the Rubi you have because I've never used it, someone else may pass comment. If you haven't got many wet cuts to do then maybe a 110mm angle grinder with a turbo blade instead of a wet cutter might do you, cheap enough and always handy to have
