Sandy plaster.

I’m working on a bathroom refit (which I have really underpriced!). I’ve taken some tiles off one of the walls and all the plaster (which was not very thick) came away too. I’m now down to the very sandy plaster. My question is can I just prime this wall or will I have to skim it. The walls are pretty straight and level. The attached pic shows the plaster/skimmed plaster & old tile adhesive. Cheers Sean

That looks like old browning / backing paster, it wouldn't make for a good job to try and tile to it imho, if you plaster it your gonna have to wait for it to dry, why not just bite the bullet, get a couple of plasterboards and fix them over it, d & d and a few screws.

as above I would dot and dab and get the job finished and money in

we all get caught from time to time and its just swallow and move on

even if you dot an dab the wall, technically you are supposed to leave it for a week to 10 days before tiling on the dot and dabbed plasterboard

I thought it looked like perished sand/cement render, either way it looks to far gone to tile onto. As above posts, I'd be removing it and dot and dabbing plasterboards on

Have you got a link to that AT ? I've never thought about it, and have never had any problems when working on it the next day

After taking of the top layer of plaster I noticed that the backing plaster was really sandy. I put my finger in a hole in the plaster and gently pulled the backing plaster away. It just fell away in big chunks. The plaster hit the floor and turned back to sand. I will plaster board the wall tomorrow and let it dry over the weekend. Cheers for help. Sean

its british standards mate. 10 days for a dab applied plasterboard prior to tiling. i'll dig the link out tomorrow mate, its on my other laptop ;0)

i dont wait that long usually, but i try and leave it a few days at least..

I should think that the plaster board would dry out pretty quick, as I propose to dot and dab with rapidset flex onto a breeze block wall. On the other side of the wall is a hot water storage tank.

As Doug, looks like old sand/cement which can be powdery.

I'd be using the correct adhesive for the boards when you dry wall

Cheers Whitebeam. I'll pop over to B&Q and get some plaster board addy. I've never D&D'd before, but I've gone through a few threads and viewed a video of a bloke doing it. Pretty confident about doing it tomorrow. Sean
