Self leveller before tiling

Tilers Forums Official Sponsors

Hi,

I have a bit of a DIY job on the cards. I have an area I want to porcelain tile in a 1970 house. About 20 square metres. I've taken up the carpet and there are those marley tiles down with some exposed bitumen near the edges where the carpet grippers were. I've masked up and take then loose bits out and hoovered carefully for any dust (I was super careful about this) but left 95% of the tiles down as they're pretty secure.

Anyway, the floor isn't level. So I have read I can use Artidex NA over bitumen and secure marley tiles without any primer, and jobs a good 'un? Or would people still suggest priming anyway? I also read that Artidex NA has a minimum depth of 3mm to be effective? Should I remove the marley tiles and just artidex the bitumen instead?

I am also not sure of the foundational DPM status, so I was maybe going to liquid DPM before the Artidex NA (if that's possible?). I used BlackJack before but its tacky as ****! Would rather use something else as not sure if the Artidex would stick to the BlackJack.

Anyway, I've rambled! Thanks for any tips. I'm losing my job in a few months time so will have to probably sell the house, so I'm on a short budget otherwise I'd get a professional in (I've put down laminate and tiles before with decent results, I swear!) and I'm getting 'ready to sell' just in case.

How old is the house ?

I often wondered what’s the story with doing this- Like it’s not really fair in the next tiler / demolitioner who comes along and doesn’t know there are asbestos tiles underneath...

I'm going to take the tiles up now anyway, as the Arditex NA says it sticks to bitumen, so just going to keep it consistent across the surface. Least I don't need to faff with a DPM.
