We are in a new build and paid for floor tiling to live, kitchen, ensuites bathroom etc. The tiling was very poor - lippage, bad grouting etc etc. Tile company reluctantly agreed to redo tiling, and have re tiled the downstairs area. They originally delivered 3 different batch numbers, which we refused to allow them to use. They eventually returned with one batch number, but ran out of tiles before completing the job. They cannot obtain the same batch number, and are wanting to complete the remaining 5 sq m (with the building company's blessing) using a different batch. We are saying no, but are being told there is no alternative! Obviously there is - start again! Should we accept the different batch number, having refused previously. 3 tiles have also got to be replaced in the middle of the floor. Any advice would be much appreciated.

It really all depends on how much of a difference there is between the batches.
With some tiles you can hardly tell at all.

We will not see the tiles until they arrive with them - they did bring some but there weren't enough. The supplier says not to mix batches.

Which is correct but worth checking suitability before you rip them back up again.

I would say 'No'. There is a very high chance the two different batch numbers will look different colours in different lighting situations i.e. daylight/dark/lights on etc. Do you know where the tiles are coming from? If they came from Topps or CTD then the stores will have a record of what batch numbers went to what stores.

You have already listed a catalogue of errors in your original post:
1. Lippage.
2. Bad grouting.
3. Insufficient tiles to complete the job.
4. Difference in batch numbers of tiles.
5. Tiles that already need replacing (I guess after being fitted for the 2nd time).

Get yourself a tiler that cares about his/her work. Your current tiler obviously did not check batch numbers and obviously started tiling without checking the quantity of tiles available.
 
Many thanks for taking the time to reply Sean. The tilers are subcontracted to the builder, so unfortunately we don't have any say, although we would really like to change! We know it was a fight getting them to redo in the first place. We have tried today to find further tiles of the same batch but there aren't any available. These tilers have also to redo our 2 en suites and our bathroom floors, plus sort out some wall tiling issues. Really wish we'd waited until we'd moved in and employed tilers ourselves, but felt this wasn't an option because there is an island in the kitchen, and the tiles go underneath it. But the island was taken out (with our hob) last November!! Anyway, thanks again. If we refuse, think we're going to have quite a fight on our hands.
 
We have now been told that the tiles we have down can only be supplied in a maximum of 45 sq m with the same batch number. We need 50 + sq m. Does this sound correct please? The tilers have provided a few different tiles of different batch numbers, but we can see a difference, especially in the finish. The different ones are duller. Would really appreciate any comments. thank you

Whey hey - WE found some tiles of the same batch number at the supplier in Devon. They have been laid, and now the floor looks like it should have done last December! We also now have our island (and hob!!) back! Thank you so much everyone for taking an interest. Really appreciate it.:):)
