This is why imo this trade ( and it is a bloody trade) has been ruined. To many people who think they can tile, working for arrogant/ greedy people, who think anyone can tile, and paying a pittance. I had one of these exploiters contact me recently.

I priced the job, sent the quote, then was amazed to get a call from the guy, who told me "we pay £xx per m2 you quoted £xx per m2. your rates are ridiculous" my reply was simple, " no mate my rates are right, to do a professional job, your rates are ridiculous" .

I hope these people never waste my time again.

Cheap rate site work.... bang em on with adhesive and grout supplied... get em grouted..get paid...
forget about setting times,tanking etc... they don't worry about it so why should you.
IN - OUT, this is not quality domestic work !!

Think it depends on the contractor and the tiler himself, although yeah much of what you say does go on. Site i have been working on has been really on the ball with things. Doing houses that the council have sold on and made into private homes. First went on the job as i got a call with the question " can you fit 60 x 30 tiles with tubbed adhesive, tiler who just started says you can", i got his job. All the bathrooms have walk in showers, all tanked, all floors have mats laid all bagged adhesive (bal), grout protecors used and all tiles are being sealed. Finish has to be of a very high standard. He is paying us well for it though.
Have done work on some sites though which are just a farce, more so companys working on council properties, they couldnt give a hoot.
