Size matters

Just wondering what size jobs people take on by themselves before time and time frames clash, if you get what i mean. My cut off is around 200mtrs. Depending on the job obviously it would take me 2-3 weeks. I only ask as i'm starting a job next week and the customer is already putting pressure on me for the time aspect. Just trying to get a feel of others speed etc

I've just taken on 5 houses, 200m in each. I'll get a labourer for it but no other tilers, I have 4 weeks per house and that's quite comfortable I think, only 2 are ready at the mo anyway.

Agree, that does sound ok, if they are empty etc. Do you have a labourer on call or just use agency??

Got a couple of people I can call on, I'm actually thinking about taking someone on permenantly, an apprentice/labourer. Could be handy for the future.

I assess the time available with the customers timescale for completion. You don't want to work under pressure before you start and 200 mts of walls is often more time consuming than floors, with windows etc. Although I've had tilers who do 60 mts of walls a shift.
Personally speaking every contract is unique and almost impossible to generalise so stay within your comfort zone and continue to enjoy or this becomes a job!

most customers ask when im going to be finished when i put my first step in the door and the dustsheets arent even laid

I always get asked the question but, have never been told its too long. I'm not one for rushing about, that's when I kick a bucket of water over or drops spacers in my addy ! 🙂

I'll try and squeeze anything in and there are a few other tilers I can call on for a dig out and they do the same with me. Oddly enough I don't really like large jobs where it's all done in one block any longer than 2 weeks as I lose too much other (often better paying) work.

Definitely worth looking into getting a helper full time Bri. I started a young lad a few months ago and he helps keep the job flowing by cutting, mixing, tidying etc while I'm fixing. Worked out that on an average job I'm about £10-20 a day better off with having him in from increased productivity, after giving him his wages. Although sometimes you need the patience of a saint.

That's exactly what I want Peter, someone to do all the donkey work and I always seem to be more productive when I've got company, 10 hours a day listening to Britney Spears and the village people, isn't any good for me 🙂
