SLC on UFH ???

Evening folks,
Sorry about the shoddy use of initials! What is the view on using self levelling compound over the wires in an under floor heating system? I have my first one to do in a couple of weeks and am not sure which way to go. I have concerns over snagging the wires with my trowel if I don't and not getting a level finish if I do! (as the stuff is really self-smoothing). All comments gratefully recieved.

Would recommend using SLC over UFH. It is not a requriement but makes your tiling easier afterwards. Nothing worse than doing a nice tiling job only to find you have damaged a cable and you have to tear it up again!

As for "levelling", your floor should be flat before you start so it shouldn't be an issue.

Thanks for the quick reply. I think I was heading that way but have one bad experience of SLC in the past. Do you have any tips especially regarding the best tools to use to spread the stuff?

I use a floor screeding trowel.

i use a spiked roller, made of plastic,aggitates out any air bubbles and makes the latex go further....
costs a few quid but you get faster,better,flatter floors......

I've had a builder do slc on ufh and the wire's lifted, turned into a nightmare

Hi,

My experience is that the wires will lift up especially of on a mat, I dont lay mat systems any more it's too much hassle. I use loose wire and tape every wire down, then use a slc or flexi adhesive, it doesn't matter if you do it correctly!

ive got a old sandstone floor to level,just had a look at spiked rollers and may invest ,is feather edge reqd aswell or just use roller..?

I always used self leveller between the cables ( only use wire systems myself ), but always ensure that the compound is latex or polymer modified stuff to cope with the temperature changes.....Gaz

i personally only use the roller, it kinda pulls the latex flat on its own, however if you dont get to latex the whole floor in one hit i would then use a trowel to bridge the dry and wet parts of latexing...good luck!

if the ufh is on a mat be careful it does,nt end up floating on the leveller.:mad2:
