Slow response times & door trimming.

Just a quick note to apologise for not getting back to you all sooner regarding the 3 floor post, It seems my tiling is as quick as my posts!
I was away for a couple of days and then my wife was away, she was right when she says - "The kids are a full time job!" , my appreciation of her multi tasking skills has obviously risen!:yes:

Just as a quick 1 my cust has asked if I would trim the doors if needed, whats your stance on this. Would you just use a jigsaw , how much would you charge and what if I take too much off or **** it up - is this covered by my insurance? - (Not that I would do that! but just in case!)

Not really part of the remit but I have done it a couple of times. I use a circular saw with a distance guide on it.

Hi Anthony,

I used to trim doors but I do not anymore. Problem with doors are if you do a Barrets, Scotia homes etc the doors are paper and there is not much left to trim of the bottom and also they normally are so crap they mark easy.

I will take doors of but now dont trim last door I had to trim a door was 3 years ago and the door was about 100 years old and the pine was hard as nails took forever and nearly broke my back taking it off, when I asked customer to give me a hand he says no way because if you damage it I wont be able to claim as I have helped you to remove it :mad2: so charged him £95 to trim and re hang but decided after that I aint going to be doing that again. When I used to trim doors I used an electric planner as jigsaws can chew door bottom especially cheap doors or the Fein cutter that allows you to cut door insitu.

By the way I will try and make myself available for the 19th see we can hit that floors for you

Thanks guys - I fear all my blades on my circular saw would tear the doors up - and although I feel pretty confident with my jig, I must admit that re-hanging doors for me has always been a bit of a nightmare......

That would be great for the 19th Highlander - your help will be much appreciated - I'm away in Ireland all next week but will gladly PM you with my details at home and my moby, so we can arrange if it suits!
With the Fein does it have some sort of guide/floor balance to ensure the door is cut straight, I have only cut door jams in situ and this takes a lot of concentration to cut straight and they are only 4 inches! (although this is with a undercut hand saw)

Re door trimming, personally I wouldn't use a jigsaw as they tend to wander a bit as the blade is thin. In the past I have taken the doors off and used a good sharp hand saw but now have invested in a door trimmer. If you are taking the door off then just run a stanley blade along side the paint line on the hinge....this prevents the paint from pulling off. If the screws are well painted clean the head and prior to turning the screwdriver give a little tap with a hammer and if the screw is tight in then try first to screw it in........helps break the bond ......before taking it out.

good post yomper i tried to trim a door with a jig saw once and it wasnt a pretty site i seen the door trim saws in my local flooring suppliers they are about £100 plus the vat fired earth charge over £30 per door for door trimming so you will soon get your money if you purchase the right tools
