Stained Grout

Tilers Forums Official Sponsors

Hi all,

I am not sure I have posted this in the correct bored, but I would appreciate some advice on the best way to sort this stained grout out please?

Thank you in advance.

Good morning,
I'd try passing some fine grained sand paper over it to remove a thin surface.
If this works, seal the grout before it happens again (I'm presuming it's not sealed?)
If the sand paper has to go too deep to remove the stain or doesn't budge it then replace the grout in the affected sections.
Just be aware that the replaced grout will end up a different colour to the rest. You can hopefully get very close though.
Then again, seal the grout to prevent it happening again too quickly.
Hope this helps

Chris

Thanks for your advice, Chris. I have bought a grout rake, could I lightly rake out the stained grout and then re-grout the areas?

Pleas can you explain how to seal the grout?

Good afternoon,

Yes, you can just rake out the stained areas although, do note that the new grout will then look different in shade.
You'll probably find you need to take out a least 5/6mm depth to get the new grout to stick into the joint.
Careful you don't damage a tile, go carefully!!

When it's all clean /new and dry apply either a grout sealer or stone sealer onto the grout.
It'll really help the grout clean up in future.

Good luck

An acidic tile cleaner will sort that out chop chop.( they are usually called grout residue remover). If you have access to a steamer then steam the chemical once applied for even better results. Get a little scrubbing brush , spray it on and scrub till it’s clean again. If any bits don’t come clean try a high alkaline cleaner for tiles ( so something called heavy duty grime and stain remover). With the acid cleaners watch your taps and chromed bits as they may get etched. Best tape everything up and use towels to cover them etc. On that note if you have stone tiles on the floor best cover these to.
