I survived cancer 24 months ago. Eosphageal cancer. It was caught so early that I'm probably in better shape now than I was before it developed. I'm 49 now.
The sad thing is it was only caught as I was paying for private medical insurance which covered the check ups far more frequently than the NHS would for someone in their 40's.
So if you get acid reflux, heart burn or serious indigestion insist on getting checked. It could be life saving. I was originally diagnosed with Barrett's Esophagus which was then monitored periodically. I had no symptoms, no discomfort I just had something picked up on one of the regular check ups.
So if you're eating far too many Rennie's or Gaviscon, go have a chat with your GP and have an oscopy of some sort just to make sure.
