Start my first paid job tomorrow!!

Hi peeps

Start my first paid job tomorrow (Sh***ing myself) 21 sqm floor to ceiling and 2 sqm floor.

Where do i start??? 1 wall to the left as a window which recess needs doing, shower wall facing as you walk in as nothing, wall to right as sink which as been boxed in needs tiling on top aswell (around sink) ..and last wall is the door wall..

Am i right in starting on the window wall, centering it and checking my cuts all around the room from there and finishing above the door? And do i leave the last tile nearest to the floor out until i have put the floor down??

Monty, you need really to start from the main focal point, usually the window but not always, and work out from there. You may want to chack out the levels around the window as well, in my experience there is quite often a difference in the levels of the wall and the window area and this can kick out your "L" shape cuts around the window. it is usually a good idea to finish around the door area as it is easier to "hide" any problems that may arise viz grout lines!

As for leaving the last line of tiles above the floor until the floor is done, that is a matter of personal choice. I don't do this myself as I prefer to have the walls all finished before I do the floors. Why wait to grout the wall until the floor is finished? you only end up getting wall grout all over the floor!

If the wall tiles need to line up with the floor start with the floor by setting out the floor you'll have to just line the walls up from there.

If floor tiles are different size to walls then start with walls check your heights of fixtures (Taps sills Bath etc) first and work out what cut you'll have at cornice and floor leave bottom tile off to cut in after floor is laid. Always try and centre the window (Not always possible) next work out widths aross the room so you have good size cuts.

So what you are really trying to do when you first get there is.

1 check tiles quanity and size
2 check and double check lay-out (Freize tiles feature walls ec) with client and make sure you and the client fully understand each other and agree on what needs to be done
3 set-out tiles horozontally then vertically for best cuts and looks
4 decide on whether the floor is tiled first or the walls depending on tiles sizes and layout.
5 take your time get it right before you start fixing anything
6 don't be nervous sell yourself.
7 take the camera and if you have a problem stop take some pics and post them and we can give advice.

Cheers grumpy....i was thinking of centering the window checking my cuts around the room and if ok then start from there, tiling the full wall leaving 1 tile out all around the window putting another batton above window to continue to ceiling, square the area of near the window...remove batton then maskin tape top recess tile until set..does this make sense?? and is this right??:mad2:

thanks mick...not sure if the floor tiles are the same yet..do i treat each wall individually? or try and get same cuts on opposite walls?

Always match cuts on oposite walls more pro tiler finish.

I'm a total beginner...and going of the past threads and my tiling course its best to start with a batton until i become confident to start without it.

i was at the NETT in JAn starting to forget some stuff as i work for the fire service and have not really done a great deal of jobs yet-part time off course

Any advice on tiling round the window how to square it of?

Hi

I did my course at NETT too back in november..

The method i was shown at Nett.

Build two colums around the window then bridge the gap at the top. Then with level make sure its all square. Then measure the distances to the highest points on the two sides top and botttom and cut all tiles to the same size, ensuring this will square off the window. Then do all the straight cuts first then do all the corners and then insert the trim. Then do the recess.

Just completed my first day and hardley got F**k all done. :mad2: By the time i put all the dust sheets down, got all the tools out, worked out all cuts with gauge rod...and then had to drive 10 miles to TOPPS to get primer and trim that customer forgot to get..( 2 hours there and back stuck in traffic) ..Got half a wall done upto the window so going to go in tomorrow and play catch up...

I'm about to tile the recess around the window...i'm going to have to make all the tiles around the window hang over 5mm for the recess tiles to be flush with the trim..is this normal or have i bought the wrong trim? I bought 9 mm trim and the tiles are 8mm

Not really sure what you mean here monty.....8mm tiles into 9mm trim should be fine!

well i've put a tile flush on line with the window put the trim butt upto it temporary...tried puttin the recess tile and it sticks out about 5 mm...so to get the recess flush i have to hang the tiles over 5mm..is it possible i could have got wrong trim or is it all the same?
