Hi everyone

Just new on the forum and have a question I need answering ASAP if possible as I have to crack on with tiling over some under floor heating wires in a kitchen on solid concrete floor. The question is this, what size trowel do I need to use to take in account the thickness of the heating element. 8, 10 or 12mm?

If it's on a screed floor did you use any thermal boards and any self leveling on the ufh.

Just to clarify my earlier thread. The self leveller was put down on top of the screed and then the under floor heating elements were stuck down onto the self leveller. I have heard of tilers putting self leveller down once the ufh is in place so as to make it a smooth surface to work on. This is not the case for this job. Do you still recommend the 10mm round notch with this further information. Sorry if I wasnt clear in my first thread.
Quick other question, whats the difference in using a round or square notch trowel?

The round notch will give you a solid bed, and 100% coverage under the tile. This can be achieved with a square edged but is much more work and effort. If you aren't slc-ing over the cables, can I assume you will be covering them with adhesive as you go? Welcome along to the forum.

I would have used the slc over the top of the ufh, you are going to have to be very careful not to damage the wires. Cover the ufh with adhesive as you go so that you get 100% coverage of adhesive under the tiles, and use a solid bed trowel, any voids will cause problems.

What adhesive are you planning to use? Make sure you are aware of its max thinkness

use slc. it's a better job that way. i use a plasic notched trowel (10mm) if there's cable below

Welcome to the forum, it can be tricky tiling over the cables. Lots of care is needed. And you can get a gizmo you attach the wires to and it bleeps or something if they break, so you know the exact spot and don't need to pull up tiles. There are also repair kits for heating too. So don't worry too much, just take lots of care.

I'd still use the round notch trowel, too.

Many thanks for all your helpful info regarding ufh. One last question. Ardex grout or Mapei grout. Which is the best one to work with and the best finish?

What adhesive/primer/SLC did you use?

I use Mapei but I would say use the same brand as the adhesive/primer/SLC.
