I've used a 6mm trowel once with Ditra.. Never again! Way too much adhesive under it. I use a 3mm trowel now, and it goes down really nicely. 10mm on top.

sorry for yet more questions..

with hardiebacker do I need to tape/fill/anything where the ply joins, before spreading addy for the backer?

There should really be silicone filled expansion gaps between the sheets of Ply.
