Hi,
I am new to the forum ans so hello everybody! I am also new to the world of tiling and bathrooms. I'd appreciate your advice on a couple of questions.
I am thinking of installing a shower cubicle (1200x900) in my bathroom. The shower tray is going to be in a corner with 2 solid stone walls and 2 screens. I went into topps tiles and they said I needed homelux waterproofing matting on the floor and walls. I also bought backer boards for the floor.

My quesstion is do I need the waterproof matting (it's very pricey) on a stone wall and floor? If so is homelux the best product to use? I've also heard about BAL tanking kit. I'd appreciate if someone could advice me on this and what adhesive to use for the wall and floor tiles as well. Thanks.

hello and welcome the forums.........CTD sell the homelux tanking membranes a lot cheaper than topps........You could tank the walls but i don't think you need to on the floor..just use the backerboards.......

The advantage of membranes is that they can be tiled on pretty much as soon as they are put up if used with rapidseting adhesive...the tanking soloutions have to dry and some take over night...

Also what size tiles are they ?...just incase you creep over the weight limits...what type of wall substrate is it as well.?

This is where I show I'm totally green behind the ears, is there a weight limit? I understand the adhesive can only retain its cohesive strength to a certai weight. If this is the case and I am going to stick with the tiles, is there a stronger adhesive that can be used or another alternative apart from changing the tile size?

What i mean by weight limits , is that you can only hang so much weight of tiles/adhesive etc to a sqr mtr of wall area......

1. plaster walls is 20kg per mtr
2. plaster board walls ( no skim ) 32kg per mtr
3.backer boards will hold about 40 kg depending on make....

hope this makes it a little clearer for you.....as long as the walls are in sound condition then these are the bs standards......

Sealux do not sell tanking kits in Ireland or elswhere, but we do promote the necessity to waterproof walls in wet areas. Our niche is in providing a transition solution between the wall and ledge that (we believe) benefits all.

Walls over tray and bath ledges should be waterproofed and connecting the wall membrane onto the ledge is an intergral part of the installation. Installers may differ on how they do this, Sealux offer one simple way of doing the job. The particular benefits of our solution are detailed in the 'Get Connected' document on our portal (sponsors link)

Sealux is not exclusively connected or tied to any brand or manufacturer. We offer our solution to all installers and manufacturers as one option to consider when addressing the issue. We are happy to work with any supplier of waterproofing materials interested in our solution.

On this occasion I mentioned www.waterproofingshowers.com in light of the enquirers comments on the BAL tanking kit. The seal installation and tanking animation on this site may be of interest to him should he choose BAL.

Hope this explains the niche position of Sealux within the waterproofing sector.
